What is a Zoning By-law?

A Zoning By-law sets the rules for how land and buildings can be used and developed within a municipality. It divides the municipality into zones and identifies what types of uses and development are permitted in each area.

The By-law also establishes requirements such as building setbacks, lot size and width, site coverage, fencing and other development standards.

The purpose of a Zoning By-law is to guide development in a safe, orderly and compatible way while supporting the long-term growth and planning of the municipality.
